Descriptions

Language Arts Mornings:

We will be exploring two of the main components of what builds a lifelong love of language: reading and writing.

In order to approach reading in a personal and fun way, we’ll be reading the first part of a book I’ve written during the pandemic. I will email chapters of the book in advance so students can read them before class. In the first hour of class time, we will operate as a creative book club. We’ll engage in discussion and vocabulary questions while trying to identify various literary components used in the storytelling. In addition, we’ll brainstorm story variations and character motivations as we hopefully have fun mixing it up and exploring various rewrites.

For writing, the basic approach will be to learn by doing and building confidence wherever confidence can be built. I’ll be getting to know each of your children by first asking them to write about what their BEST POSSIBLE DAY would look like. I want to know what inspires them. From this writing assignment, I will be able to do an informal writing assessment (which can adjust as the weeks go), learn about their interests and motivations, and develop a plan for what sort of prompts and/or missions I can give them to write about. Furthermore, we’ll be learning about the editing process. For everything we write, we’ll be typing them up and looking at suggested changes. I’ll be encouraging the students to share these writings with you. I’ll be helping them every step of the way with spelling, grammar, organization, and content.

Students can stay in the afternoons for extended options and/or tutoring with extra associated costs.

Working Hands Wednesdays:

The basic idea here is we will be using our hands. We will drum, do yardwork, cook, build stuff using basic carpentry, get to know some tools, maintain bikes, ride bikes, help clean up local mountain bike trails, learn the basics about how to check fluids in a car, learn how to change a tire, explore gardening and dirt, climb trees, play basketball, play tennis, start businesses, learn about finances, etc. The first week’s goal will be to establish what things the students are most interested in and focus in on that. Once I have that in place, I will create a more structured plan for the following weeks. There is so much we can do with our hands. Let’s get ‘em dirty!

Private Tutoring:

Tailored subject area tutoring in a one on one environment (in person or on zoom). I have found that helping students stay focused in an hour session enables us to accomplish more in straight academics than several days of trying to work within a group. All of our children are unique, and that is a wonderful thing. Private tutoring enables me to speak to that uniqueness, cater my approach to their strengths and needs, and do it an a personal and attentive way. Availability on Mondays, Tuesday afternoons, Wednesday afternoons, and Thursdays. For some cases, a weekend hour may become available.

Extended Care:

Facilitated extra care. For example, do you really need to work on Thursday? Well, have your kid join us at my home, and I’ll help keep them on a daily routine and be available for assistance when and if they need it. This can be combined with private tutoring as well.

Field Trip Fridays:

Full day environmental and cultural explorations of the best Central Florida has to offer. We will collect nature finds, play sports, go fishing, climb trees, and remember what it’s like to connect to the birds, bugs, beasts, and trees.  Comfortability around water and a skill in swimming is a plus but not required. Schedule of trips coming soon with some extra costs for any experience that requires admission fees. Note: Most, if not all, of the trips will be to free locations. The list of locations coming soon.
